LOPSA-NJ: January Meeting Find the Correct Fudge Factor: Implementing Accurate Network Time Protocol Servers!

Date: Thursday January 7 2010
Time: 7:00 PM - 7:20 PM - Social Time
7:20 PM - 7:25 PM - LOPSA-NJ Business and Announcements
7:25 PM - 7:30 PM - LOPSA-NJ Professional IT Community Conference (PICC) News
7:30 PM - 9:00 PM - Main Presentation

Join LOPSA-NJ as Jon Meek presents his latest experiments in highly accurate, low-cost, NTP servers. These experimental servers are based on GPS but use multiple methods to verify that they have the correct fudge factor.

Jon will present his poster, "Validating a Stratum 1 Network Time Protocol Server Find the Correct Fudge," recently seen at USENIX/LISA'09, with corrections, as well as disclosing his top-secret grandiose future plans, including:

+ using his new hot air re-work station to replace crystal oscillators
from motherboards in the servers

+ replacing the crystal with a fancy frequency synthesizer that has
an oven-controlled oscillator

+ using a GPS that outputs a 10 MHz clock signal as the base for
the clock

As Jon recently said on the LOPSA-NJ mailing list, "Stable system clock -> Better NTP stability."

It's clear that Jon has been a busy in his laboratory. We're all excited to see what he's cooked up!

Jon is a Senior Technical Lead at Pfizer with primary responsibilities in security, logging, Internet and third party connectivity, and network performance testing and monitoring. He joined American Cyanamid, a Pfizer predecessor company, 27 years ago is an experimental physicist to work on a project that required very accurate frequency measurements.

LOPSA-NJ is an organization in New Jersey formed to transfer professional knowledge among system administrators. LOPSA-NJ is not affiliated with any particular hardware or software vendor or company. Everyone is invited!
